Written over a period of some ten years and with the illness of the composer’s daughter Olga hanging over him, the three main elements of Janáček’s inspiration at the time – the countryside, social justice and his beloved daughter – are brought together in his great opera Jenůfa, a work of outstanding creative unity, scored with music of high drama and rare beauty in which the composer poured out his love for his afflicted daughter through the central character of Jenůfa.

Opera Project’s artistic directors Richard Studer and Jonathan Lyness put Opera Project to one side for the summer to return to Longborough Festival Opera (LFO) as the creative team for this new LFO production. Lee Bisset returns to the Cotswolds to sing the title role, with Andrew Rees as Steva, Daniel Norman as Laca and the fabulous Gaynor Keeble in the notorious role of Kostelnicka Buryjovka.

“…an extremely stylish Vixen… This was operatic imagery at its best and just one example of how well Richard Studer staged this most curious opera. It was musically glorious too with Studer’s long-term collaborator Jonathan Lyness drawing a gorgeous sound from the reduced chamber score.”  Opera Now, Nov/Dec 2008, Cunning Little Vixen, LFO

“The sets and costumes were by Richard Studer, sparse and simple and completely conjuring up the village dominated by the Volga, whose hypnotic theme permeates the opera from the start. Jonathan Lyness, who had conducted a fine Vixen at Longborough in 2008, drew superb and idiomatic playing from the orchestra, powerful, seductive and with a spine-tingling cutting edge from the upper strings. Lee Bisset’s wonderful portrayal of Katya, meanwhile, should ensure her entrée into any opera house in the world where this work is being performed…”  Opera, Sep 2012, Katya Kabanova, LFO
